An Introduction to Bulimia
Bulimia, which is sometimes referred to as bulimia nervosa, is an eating disorder which affects sufferers psychologically. The disorder is defined by bouts of binge eating followed by unusual methods of weight loss, known as purging. These can include, but are not limited to; vomiting, fasting, enemas and excessive use of diuretic drugs. A binge is a term used to describe an individual gorging themselves on food in an over indulgent fashion. This is usually not for reasons of hunger but in response to deeper issues such as depression.
People that suffer bulimia often look perfectly normal and most have a healthy weight for their height and age. Binging and purging are usually kept private and sufferers are often known to deny their condition. It can sometimes prove difficult to determine if somebody is suffering from bulimia. Sufferers often consume vast amounts of food, sometimes up to 20,000 calories at a time. Comfort foods are usually used during a binge – cakes, chocolate and other high sugar alternatives. A sufferer may binge anywhere from twice a day to several times daily.
At the moment there is no known cause for bulimia. Health experts have began to believe that negative self beliefs about an individuals person, such as body size and shape, have definite affects on the probability of bulimia occurring. Sufferers of bulimia are also prone to low self-esteem and feelings of helplessness. If you or a family member are suffering from an eating disorder it is vital that you seek out help from a health practitioner.
